What trends are shaping the health and wellness industry right now?Quality and personalization are at an all-time low. The major factor people consider when choosing a provider is whether they take their insurance not whether they’re going to get them the results they want. More and more people are turning to AI, YouTube, and Google for medical advice than the health care system. This is a trend that we are trying to reverse through personalized care that focuses on the goals that people want to achieve.
How do you approach holistic well-being with your clients or audience? Our treatment approach is based on a holistic physical therapy philosophy. The traditional medical system chops our body up into different parts and treats them as though they exist in isolation from one another. We treat the body as a whole. This allows us to help our clients overcome injuries and stiffness more quickly and more effectively so they can move on to strength training and build a body that’s ready for anything.
What challenges do you see in helping people sustain healthy habits? The biggest challenge is mindset. Most people believe it is simply too hard or there’s not enough time to sustain healthy habits. It’s easy to look at the whole journey and become overwhelmed. We help our clients focus on one small step at a time. This allows them to make change that lasts without getting overwhelmed or burned out.
How do you tailor programs for different fitness or health needs?Communication is key. Our process starts with understanding where a person is coming from and what their goals are. The next step is a detailed full-body evaluation, followed by a preliminary treatment session that shows us how their body will respond to treatment. This lets us develop programs that fit a person’s lifestyle, schedule, and physical needs so they can smash their goals.
What role does technology play in supporting wellness today?Technology allows me to be present with my clients wherever they are. Our clients receive their exercises through an app on their phone so they always know exactly what their program is and how it should look. This app also gives them continuous access for questions or problem solving. They don’t have to take an afternoon off or plan hours out of their day to come into the clinic to ask a question. They just have to message.
Can you share a story of transformation you’ve witnessed? We had a young man came to us because his back pain was preventing him from standing up for more than five minutes at a time. He loves the outdoors and especially fishing. After working with us he has been able to do back country fishing expeditions. He’s been able to travel. He’s been able to go off shore fishing. He’s been able to restart exercising and recently was able to run three miles.
What motivates you in this industry every day? When I was in the Army I sustained several injuries that haunted me for decades. Eventually I started getting numbness in my leg and I thought I would have to give up climbing, diving, weigth lifting, and running. Nobody had any answers for me. Fortunately, as a physcial therapist, I was able to figure it out for myself. Doing it alone was scary and I had no idea if I would make it through.
My mission is to make sure everyone who comes to me understands what is happening to them, leaves with a plan to fix it, and has someone to walk with them ever step of the way.
