On 5 Minute Salute our hosts Chris Budihas and Steve Strum talk to veterans making a difference in their communities. Today, Steve and Chris has the honor to speak with Arthur Bendolph of Defeat Cancer with ACCCOLPH.

Short description of you or your company: At Defeat Cancer, we combat prostate cancer by raising awareness, educating the public, and advocating for early detection. We strive to reduce stigma, empower individuals, and support those affected. Our goal is to create a future where prostate cancer is openly discussed and no longer poses a threat to men’s health

What Is Your Why (Why Do You Do What You Do)?: We have experienced the impact of hearing the words, “You have cancer.’” It’s a moment that changes lives forever. Every day, our mission is to combat this disease head-on through unwavering support, comprehensive education, and the dissemination of knowledge. We are dedicated to empowering individuals and communities to stand firm against cancer, fostering a world where such a diagnosis is no longer feared but faced with hope and a robust support system.
How did you get started in your field or work?: Surviving Cancer every Male in my family had/has cancer

What’s one thing we should know that makes you or your company unique?:
When I received my diagnosis, it felt like a dark cloud had settled over my life. As a Gulf War veteran, I had faced many challenges, but this was different. The weight of my family history loomed large—my grandfather, father, and uncle had all lost their battles to this disease. Confronting my own mortality ignited a fire within me. I knew I had to not only fight for my life but also advocate for the lives of others.

I urged my brothers and male relatives to get tested, hoping to break the cycle of silence surrounding prostate cancer. The heartbreaking discovery that two of my brothers were also diagnosed deepened my resolve. This experience transformed my fear into a powerful motivation to promote early detection and dismantle the stigma, especially within the African American community, where prostate cancer is disproportionately prevalent.

What are your biggest goals in the next 6 to 12 Months?:
Community Awareness Events: Organize local events to raise awareness about cancer prevention and early detection, like health fairs or workshops.

Support Groups: Establish support groups for cancer patients and their families to share experiences and provide emotional support.

Fundraising Initiatives: Create community fundraising events, such as walks or runs, to support cancer research and patient assistance programs.

Volunteer Programs: Encourage community members to volunteer their time to help cancer patients with transportation, meals, or companionship.

Educational Outreach: Partner with schools and local organizations to provide educational resources about cancer and healthy lifestyle choices.
