How long have you been in your industry?9 years
Why did you choose your industry?Ultimately, because it allows me to help make a difference in people's lives by leveraging my natural skills & abilities. I enjoy sales, simply because I enjoy connecting with people in my community and building relationships. I enjoy recruiting because it allows me to help individuals take next steps in their career, increase their compensation and impact the quality of their life & their family's life. Bringing those two functions together, and their innate synergy, means I really love what I do each and every day.
Who are your typical clients?Anyone who is looking for talent in the accounting & finance space, really. We are a boutique firm, that is industry agnostic, and we work with small to large businesses. The primary focus is partnering with clients who appreciate our consultative style, and who are looking to work with subject matter experts.
What do you like best about being in this industry? All of the people I get to meet every day. I'm a people person! I majored in Psychology at the University of Florida, and went on to pursue a Masters in Counseling, because I like working with people in a variety of capacities. I started my career in non-profits, working with people with disabilities, helping them find job opportunities and teaching them life skills. Today, I'm working with executive level talent, helping them take the next step in their career. No matter how long you do this job, and in whatever capacity, every time you help someone take a next step in their career/life it feels as great as the first time you helped. You can't really beat that!
What are common problems you see?Market knowledge! We support both candidates and clients, and the market is forever shifting and changing. In either position, you need to understand how to best leverage yourself or your organization in the marketplace based on the current trends. Too often candidates will turn down a stellar opportunity, or a client with pass on a Rockstar candidate, simply because they want what they want and aren't willing to make any concessions. The unemployment rate is low, especially in Florida, be mindful of opportunities to make those concessions, so you're not passing up a great opportunity. If nothing else, find a great recruiting partner who can help advise/guide you through this process. Especially if you haven't been in "that" position for awhile.
What advice/tips do you have for clients?I would have to say have a refined hiring process, be able to effectively communicate your companies value proposition & culture as well as your total benefits offering. We are no longer in a market where candidates are simply asking what your total compensation package is. Flexibility, value alignment, employee experience, growth opportunities--these are at the forefront of every candidates mind. Also, your hiring process is a direct reflection of how you conduct business on a day-to-day basis, so this is often the candidates first impression of your organization.
When is your busy season?Depends. In recruiting, our busy season shifts when the market shifts.
What keeps you up at night? My kids! LOL Honestly, nothing related to my job. When we get busy, sometimes I get stressed about being able to deliver for all of my candidates & clients, but that's why we have teams built out in our markets. Teamwork makes the dream work!
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?Like most sales & recruiting professionals, NETWORKING and talking to as many people as possible. Every client & candidate who has had a positive experience with you, will refer you to a friend or colleague. It's really common sense sales & recruiting--always do the right thing(the StevenDouglas mantra), be memorable and make sure everyone who comes in contact with you has a positive experience.
How involved are you in the community?Recently, I've done some speaking engagements for Elevate Women(a JAXUSA partnership) & the Jacksonville Women's Business Center sharing knowledge around board readiness & executive recruitment with female executives in our community. I also had the opportunity to partner with some of those female executives to help them refresh their resume and prepare for an interview. (Which I love!) StevenDouglas also has a relationship with a group called fiCFO, which means we have the opportunity to network and learn all about what's happening in our business community directly from CFO's. Once upon a time, I held board seats for the JAX Chamber Health Council & Episcopal Children's Services.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?Again, it would be hard to name just one. Philanthropy of any sort, is near & dear to my heart. I'll always have a place in my heart for Episcopal Children's Services. As of late, my husband & I have also supported Ronald McDonald House, United Way & Hunger Fight. Any & all charities/non-profits deserve equal acknowledgement though, their work is the most important of all.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?Do the work! I love my job, but I have to be honest, it was hard work getting here. You start by making cold calls(lots of them), randomly popping into a business office dropping off goodies, and telling absolute strangers about what you do for a living just hoping that they'll know someone who is looking for a job or who is looking to hire someone in your area of specialization. You have to do those things in order to establish yourself in your community and eventually be seen as a subject matter expert. It takes time, effort, persistence and GRIT! Be patient and intentional!
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Spending time with my friends & family. I have two beautiful girls who are the center of my universe, a fun-loving husband, the world's most supportive parents and an amazing core group of best friends. I'm blessed, and I never ever let myself forget it. This quality time is what keeps me going, even when I feel like the tank is empty.
