Brian: welcome to another edition of Finding Your Frequency. I’m Brian Sexton, joined today by Miranda Gon of Lex Aero here in Jacksonville, a law firm specializing in aviation.

Brian: How are you?

Miranda: I’m well, thank you.

Brian: Why aviation? Why did you choose to focus in that area with your law firm? Was it underserved?

Miranda: Well, candidly, I fought it for a long time, actually. I have a background in aviation — I’m an Army aviator and had the opportunity to fly Black Hawks. My law partner has many years of experience flying in the general aviation sector. I’ve been an attorney for well over ten years and ended up working for GE Aviation. It seemed like I was fighting an uphill battle, so I finally acquiesced and listened to my law partner. We started Lex Aero, focusing on aviation law.

I don’t necessarily think it’s an underserved area. There are firms that do it, but what we offer is a unique perspective — we both have the credibility of being aviators and pilots, and we approach our clients’ issues with that mindset.

Brian: Can you say again what you flew? Because you flew Black Hawks — you flew Black Hawks, for goodness’ sake!

Miranda: Yeah, in combat. I did deploy overseas, but I didn’t see any combat.

Brian: But still, you were prepared for combat.

Miranda: Yeah, I would say flying in the desert is kind of like flying in a snow globe — but with sand. That does give you a unique perspective on aviation.

Brian: What are some of the big challenges that you or your clients are facing? What are the things that they bring to you to help them solve?

Miranda: A lot of it is contract management and negotiation. We do a lot of sale and purchase of aircraft. Ultimately, many of our clients — whether aviation is a hobby or a business — share the commonality that it’s expensive. So our clients come to us hoping to prevent or resolve issues that could be financially devastating. We focus on helping them protect their interests and manage risk.

Brian: So you’re dealing with corporate aviation or even enthusiasts — people who want to buy an airplane and fly it out of the hangar on a Saturday?

Miranda: The whole gamut, actually. General aviation covers everything that isn’t military aviation and isn’t the scheduled airlines — everything in between. That includes enthusiasts, weekend owner-operators, flight schools, maintenance facilities, fixed-base operators, airport authorities, FAA enforcement issues, corporate flight departments, and charter operations.

Brian: You talked about both you and your partner being aviators. Do you find that most lawyers who work in this space don’t fly?

Miranda: I’d hate to put a percentage on it — some do, and some don’t. You can be a very successful attorney who manages big truck cases but has never been a semi driver and still do great. But with aviation, it gives you a level of credibility and understanding behind the scenes — what you might experience as an aviator.

Brian: I’ve never flown a plane, but my son is a pilot, and I’ve been with him. I’m always amazed at how much you have to prepare to fly and how much you have to balance what’s going on around you — looking through the screen, listening to the headset. What about your training and your time behind the stick has helped you transition to the law?

Miranda: Great question. You really have to be deliberate — there’s a lot of planning involved. It’s tenacious and tedious, but the better the planning, the more successful the outcome. It’s a lot about task management and being able to manage the sequence of flight as you go. That background helps us manage our clients’ matters with the same discipline.

Brian: Let’s talk about transitioning out of the military — which is a big team — to working for a corporation, and then to working for yourself. Going from being a pilot to being a lawyer to having your own firm — that’s a lot of transition in ten years.

Miranda: I would say the commonality through all of that is discipline and consistency. Each experience — military, corporate, and entrepreneurship — has been unique, and I’ve learned from each one. But what’s allowed me to be successful is consistency, tenacity, and hard work.

Brian: Part of Finding Your Frequency is dialing in who you are and who you want to be. What was it about being a pilot that led you to want to be a lawyer?

Miranda: Actually, I was a lawyer first. I was in the middle of law school and had plans to go active-duty JAG for the military. I was approached about the opportunity to pursue aviation and thought it would be the opportunity of a lifetime. I figured I could always go JAG later. I applied, was approved, and got a flight school slot after graduating law school.

Law school came more naturally to me — aviation didn’t, and I was intimidated by flight school. But it was a fantastic opportunity that really tested my mettle. It’s an accomplishment I treasure immensely.

Brian: The open-mindedness to change course like that — to have a plan and then pivot — is impressive. What about your personality makes you open to ideas like that?

Miranda: I feel like I can adapt and pivot easily. I’m always looking for opportunities for self-growth, and it just seemed like a natural opportunity to take.

Brian: Who would be a good candidate to be a client for Lex Aero?

Miranda: Anyone who works in the general aviation business. We’d welcome the opportunity to help with aircraft sales or purchases, establishing LLCs to own aircraft, drafting operating agreements, handling wet or dry leases, assisting flight schools, corporate or charter operations — really anyone seeking legal advice or facing regulatory challenges in aviation.

Brian: And the best place to find you online?

Miranda: You can visit us at LexAeroLaw.com.

Brian: Great. Thanks so much for joining us.

Miranda: It was a pleasure. Thank you for having me.

Brian: And we’ll see you next time here on Finding Your Frequency.
